How to do a buddy read that does not fall apart in week two

How to pick the book and the partner, agree a pace, handle spoilers, and keep a buddy read going when one of you falls behind.

A buddy read is two or more people reading the same book at the same time and talking about it as they go. It is one of the best ways to finish a book you have been putting off, and one of the easiest to abandon, because the first week is exciting and the second is a calendar problem.

Set it up properly

  1. 1Pick a book both of you actually want. If one of you is doing a favour, it will show by chapter four.
  2. 2Choose a length you can finish. A 300-page novel in two weeks is a plan; a 900-page fantasy in two weeks is a wager.
  3. 3Agree the pace in chapters or pages per day, not "as we can". Write it down where you can both see it.
  4. 4Decide how you will talk. A shared chat, a thread, or one call at the halfway point. Pick one and stick to it.
  5. 5Agree a spoiler rule before you start. The simplest is: only talk about what you have both read.

Keep it going

  • Share small reactions as you go, not essays. A single line sent mid-chapter is what makes it feel like reading together.
  • Let the faster reader wait. Racing ahead and sitting on spoilers ruins it for both of you.
  • If one of you falls behind, shift the finish date rather than abandoning the plan. A buddy read that ends a week late is a success.
  • End with a proper conversation. Ratings, favourite moments and what you disagreed on, which is usually the best part.

Groups and readalongs

With more than two readers, appoint someone to set the weekly target and post the discussion prompt. Without one person holding the schedule, groups drift. Keep the group small enough that everybody is heard, and the pace slow enough that the busiest person can keep up.

Seeing each other's progress helps more than any reminder. When you can both see that the other is on page 140, you do not need to nag.

Cherry Books has buddy reads built in, so you can see each other's progress and talk about it as you go. See it at cherrybooks.app
