Many readers feel a little guilty rereading. The TBR is huge, the goal is ticking, and here you are reading a book you already know the ending of. But rereading is one of the oldest and most rewarding ways to read, and a reading life without it is missing something.

What a second read gives you
- Comfort. You know it ends well, so you can relax into it. That is exactly what a hard week needs.
- Detail. The first read is for the plot; the second is for the foreshadowing, the small kindnesses, the line you skimmed past.
- A measure of yourself. A book you loved at twenty reads differently at thirty. The book did not change.
- A way out of a slump. A familiar story restarts the habit when nothing new feels right.
How to log a reread
Treat each reading as its own trip, not a replacement for the first. Keep the original dates and rating, and add the new ones alongside. That way your history stays true, and you can see how your opinion moved.
- 1Log the start and finish dates of the reread.
- 2Rate it again without looking at your old rating first.
- 3Write one line on what you noticed this time that you missed before.
- 4Decide whether it counts towards your yearly total. Most readers say yes, and it is your log.
Keep a comfort shelf
Make a small shelf of the books you return to when life is loud. Five or six is enough. When you are tired, ill or between books, you do not have to choose; you just pick from the shelf. Many readers find this one shelf does more for their reading habit than any challenge.
The books readers reread most
Rereads tend to be books with a strong voice and a world you want to live in: cosy romance, found-family fantasy, childhood favourites and long series before a new book comes out. If you notice the same book on your log three years running, it is not a gap in your reading. It is a favourite doing its job.
Cherry Books keeps every reread as its own trip, with reread marks on your shelf and a comfort reread suggested when you need one. See it at cherrybooks.appSets from this guide
